Dr Marjolaine Viret is an attorney admitted to the Geneva bar (Switzerland) who specialises in sports and life sciences. Her interests focus on interdisciplinary approaches as a way of designing effective solutions in the field of anti-doping and other science-based domains. Her book “Evidence in Anti-Doping at the Intersection of Science & Law” was published through T.M.C Asser Press / Springer in late 2015.

Marjolaine gained significant experience in litigation and international arbitration as a senior associate in one of Switzerland’s leading law firms, frequently appearing before the Court of Arbitration for Sport and advising clients, including major sports federations on doping matters. She regularly intervenes internationally as a lecturer or speaker. She has also held positions within panels and committees in sports organisations, currently as a member of the UCI Anti-Doping Commission. She is actively involved in developing strategies and setting priorities in the fight against doping.

In parallel to her attorney work, Marjolaine obtained a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Health Law, specifically on the regulation of therapeutic products, research and innovation. She has acted on expert groups and projects on anti-doping medicine or research, and is recognised for her expertise in advising on matters that require receptiveness to scientific materiae.

Marjolaine holds a PhD from the University of Fribourg (Switzerland). Her doctoral thesis dealt with the interplay between scientific and legal components in the field of anti-doping. She currently participates as a Swiss National Science Foundation post-doctoral researcher in the WADC Commentary Project at the University of Neuchâtel (Switzerland), under the direction of Prof. Antonio Rigozzi, with the goal of producing the first comprehensive legal commentary of the 2015 World Anti-Doping Code. She is a co-author of the anti-doping blog created as part of the project, which provides comments on decisions of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in doping matters (www.wadc-commentary.com/antidopingblog).

Outside work, Marjolaine is a passionate endurance and trail runner who is most likely to be spotted in the mountains, in Switzerland or elsewhere.
