Cycling Athlete Leynier Alonso Receives Sanction for Anti-Doping Rule Violation

USADA announced today that Leynier Alonso, of Miami Gardens, Fla., an athlete in the sport of cycling, has received a four-year suspension for an anti-doping rule violation.

Alonso, 43, tested positive for phentermine as the result of an in-competition urine sample collected at the Tour of South Florida on February 16, 2020. Phentermine is a Non-Specified substance in the class of Stimulants and is prohibited in-competition under the USADA Protocol for Olympic and Paralympic Movement Testing, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee National Anti-Doping Policies, and the Union Cycliste Internationale Anti-Doping Rules, all of which have adopted the World Anti-Doping Code and the World Anti-Doping Agency Prohibited List.

Alonso’s four-year period of ineligibility began on March 17, 2020, the date his provisional suspension was imposed. In addition, Alonso has been disqualified from competitive results obtained on and subsequent to February 16, 2020, the date his positive sample was collected, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.
