Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Pro Bono Appointed

Glasgow 2014

Glasgow 2014, with support from its Official Legal Advisors Harper Macleod, has today (Tuesday 27 May) announced the names of those appointed to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Pro Bono Legal Advice and Representation Service.

The practitioners will provide free legal advice and representation for accredited athletes, coaches, team officials, Commonwealth Games Associations, International Federations and National Federations.

A total of 17 solicitors’ firms and barristers’ chambers and 19 individual solicitors, advocates and barristers have been appointed for the period between 8 July to 6 August.

A committee made up of The Law Society of Scotland, the Faculty of Advocates and legal representatives with a background in sports law selected the solicitors, advocates, barristers and individual practitioners.

The members were selected from around 100 applications from practitioners within the UK legal profession who offered their services during the Games.

A general service covering seven areas of law is to be offered along with a sports advocacy service for athletes who may appear before the ad hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which sits during the period of the Games.

Sport Resolutions (UK), the independent dispute resolution service for sport in the United Kingdom, will act as the secretariat for the Service undertaking the day-to-day administration and operation of the Service during the Games period.

The purpose of the Service is to provide a safety net for those who do not have their own legal representatives in place in Scotland and who may have difficulty in identifying representation at short notice.

David Grevemberg, Glasgow 2014 Chief Executive, said:

“Glasgow 2014’s Pro Bono Legal Advice and Representation Service is delighted to welcome the support of representatives of the legal profession in Scotland and across the UK. The members will undoubtedly provide a high-quality service to athletes and officials at Games time.”

Austin Lafferty, Chair of the Pro Bono Management Committee, said:

“Whilst I didn’t doubt we would have the talent, experience and enthusiasm available in the legal profession for this service, the committee members and I are delighted that so many excellent lawyers have made themselves available to commit their own time and work for the benefit of the Games. We have solicitors, advocates and barristers for every day and hour, and for every potential legal problem that may arise.”
