Nash and Zahner elected onto the UCI Athletes' Commission

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) is pleased to announce that Katerina Nash (Czech Republic) and Simon Zahner (Switzerland) have been elected to represent cyclo-cross on the UCI Athletes' Commission, after a vote held during the 2017 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships this weekend in Bieles, Luxembourg.

Nash and Zahner were chosen from a field of nine candidates - five men and four women - by athletes participating in the UCI Elite World Championships.

Amongst the women’s candidates, Nash obtained 38,6% of the votes, while Zahner achieved 33% for men.

Participation rate has been of 82,2%.

Members of the Commission are elected with a four-year mandate running from the UCI Congress in 2017 to the Congress in 2021.

The election comes as part of the renewal of all UCI Commissions in 2017.

This year, the UCI has taken the decision to increase the representation of its various disciplines on the Athletes' Commission by modifying its electoral system.

This new voting system will see the UCI Athletes' Commission grow from 13 to 16 members, with a perfect Men/Women balance for each of the eight disciplines.

In line with the election method of the Athletes' Commission of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which elects its members at each Olympic Games, elections of the two representatives from each discipline will take place every four years at the UCI World Championships of the relevant discipline.

The mission of the Commission is:

• Presenting the UCI Management Committee with its wide-ranging considerations in order to improve the role of athletes in all disciplines;
• Promoting/improving the respect and rights of athletes in all forms of cycling and in all disciplines;
• Promoting ethics and all fair play rules inherent to the practice of cycling at all levels;
• Providing a direct link with the UCI Management Committee for major events;
• Informing athletes of the range of professional training available to them during and after their sporting careers;
• Acting as ambassadors and role models for all disciplines and at all levels.

According to the Commission's terms of reference, the President of the Athletes' Commission is elected by his/her peers and is co-opted onto the UCI Management Committee, the executive body of the Federation which operates under the authority of the Congress. In addition, one representative on the Athletes' Commission from each discipline automatically becomes a member of the Commission of his/her discipline, and therefore represents the athletes on that Commission.

The renewal of the Athletes' Commission, with wider representation of disciplines, comes a year after the Commission was overhauled - one of the key commitments of Brian Cookson, since taking up the UCI Presidency in 2013.

Nash et Zahner élus à la Commission des Athlètes UCI

L’Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) a le plaisir d’annoncer que Katerina Nash (République tchèque) et Simon Zahner (Suisse) ont été élus pour représenter le cyclo-cross à la Commission des Athlètes UCI, à l’occasion d’un vote organisé en marge des Championnats du Monde Cyclo-cross UCI 2017, ce week-end à Bieles, au Luxembourg.

Nash et Zahner ont été choisis par les athlètes inscrits aux Championnats du Monde Élite UCI, entre neuf candidats, cinq hommes et quatre femmes.

Parmi les femmes candidates, Nash a obtenu 38,6% des votes, tandis que chez les hommes Zahner a atteint 33%.

Le taux de participation s’est élevé à 82,2%.

Les membres de la Commission sont élus pour une durée de quatre ans, avec un mandat effectif à partir du Congrès UCI de 2017, et ce jusqu’à celui de 2021.

Cette élection intervient dans le cadre du renouvellement des Commissions UCI en 2017.

A cette occasion, l’UCI a décidé d’accroître la représentation de ses différentes disciplines au sein de la
Commission des Athlètes en modifiant le mode d’élection.

Ce nouveau mode de scrutin verra la Commission des Athlètes UCI passer de 13 à 16 membres, avec une parfaite parité hommes/femmes pour chacune des huit disciplines.

En ligne avec le mode d’élection de la Commission des Athlètes du Comité International Olympique (CIO), qui élit ses membres à l’occasion des Jeux Olympiques, les élections des deux représentants de chaque discipline se tiendront tous les quatre ans lors des Championnats du Monde UCI de la discipline concernée.

La mission de la Commission consiste à :

• Présenter au Comité Directeur de l’UCI ses propositions sur un grand nombre de sujets, afin d’améliorer le rôle des athlètes dans toutes les disciplines,
• Promouvoir/améliorer le respect et les droits des athlètes dans le cyclisme sous toutes ses formes et dans toutes les disciplines,
• Promouvoir le sens éthique et l’esprit sportif inhérents à la pratique du cyclisme à tous les niveaux,
• Établir un lien direct avec le comité directeur de l’UCI en ce qui concerne les événements majeurs,
• Informer les athlètes du choix de formations professionnelles à leur disposition au cours de leur carrière sportive ainsi qu’après,
• Jouer un rôle d’ambassadeurs et de modèles pour toutes les disciplines et à tous les niveaux.

Selon le cahier des charges de la Commission, le Président de la Commission des Athlètes sera élu par ses pairs et il sera coopté au sein du Comité Directeur de l’UCI, l’organe exécutif de la Fédération qui officie sous l’autorité du Congrès. En outre, un représentant de chaque discipline siégeant au sein de la Commission des Athlètes sera automatiquement membre de la commission de sa discipline et représentera donc la voix des athlètes au sein de cette dernière.

Le renouvellement de la Commission des Athlètes, avec représentativité élargie des disciplines, intervient un an après la rénovation de la Commission, un des engagements de Brian Cookson à la tête de l’UCI depuis 2013.
