Rugby union player, Miles Normandale, banned for two years

Rugby union player Miles Normandale, then of Cardiff RFC, has been suspended from all sport for a period of two years following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV).

Mr Normandale tested positive for the presence of the prohibited substance clomiphene following an out-of-competition test, during a club training session on 20 September 2018.

Clomiphene is listed under section 4.3 of the WADA 2018 Prohibited List as an anti-estrogenic modulator. It is a Specified Substance, prohibited at all times.

Mr Normandale was charged with an ADRV pursuant to Article 2.1 of the Anti-Doping Rules – “Presence of a Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers in an Athlete’s Sample”.

UKAD’s Chief Executive, Nicole Sapstead, said: “Athletes at all levels of sport must adhere to the principle of strict liability at all times.

“Image and Performance Enhancing Drugs (IPEDs) can remain in the body for a significant period of time so, regardless of whether an athlete is going through injury rehabilitation, taking a break from sport or actively competing, they must always be aware of the consequences of any substances they are putting into their systems.”

The period of ineligibility shall apply from the date of sample collection (20 September 2018) until midnight on 19 September 2020.
