At the opening of the 140th IOC Session, IOC President Thomas Bach provided an update to the IOC membership on the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine with the support of Belarus and its consequences for the Olympic Movement.

He said: “Our outrage of this brutal war, our compassion with the human suffering and our solidarity with the Ukrainian Olympic community remain as strong as ever.” President Bach then highlighted the important role that sport can play in contributing to peace and unity.

He welcomed again the G7 position and the alignment of this position with the IOC approach.

We therefore have a strong base to protect the athlete. We have a strong base for our mission to unite the entire world in peaceful competition. We have a strong base of support for our unity. From the very first moment we are – and we will be – in this together. We are standing together in the interest of the athlete. The athletes bring our values to life,” the IOC President said.
