UCI statement on Giampaolo Caruso

The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announces that it has notified Italian rider Giampaolo Caruso of an Adverse Analytical Finding of Erythropoietin (EPO) in a sample collected during an out-of-competition test on 27 March 2012. The sample had been stored and was reanalysed in light of new scientific developments (*).

The rider has the right to request and attend the analysis of the B sample.

In accordance with UCI Anti-doping Rules (UCI ADR), the rider has been provisionally suspended until the adjudication of the affair.

At this stage of the procedure, the UCI will not comment any further.

(*) As per the World Anti-Doping Code and the UCI ADR, the UCI has established a Storage and Reanalysis Strategy. The strategy, implemented by the Cycling Anti-Doping Foundation (CADF), provides that samples from the leaders of the Grand Tours, UCI World Championships and general rankings of all cycling disciplines will be stored for potential retesting. Other samples, based on risk assessment carried out by the CADF, laboratory recommendations, Athlete Biological Passport data, new detection methods and scientific developments, will also be retained for retesting. The standard time of storage and further reanalysis under this strategy is up to 10 years.

L’Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) annonce qu’elle a notifié le coureur italien Giampaolo Caruso d’un résultat d’analyse anormal (présence d’erythropoïétine - EPO) dans un échantillon collecté à l’occasion d’un contrôle hors compétition le 27 mars 2012. L’échantillon avait été conservé et a été récemment réanalysé suite à des développements scientifiques (*).

Le coureur a le droit de demander l’analyse de l’échantillon B et d’y assister.

Conformément au Règlement antidopage de l’UCI (RAD UCI), ce dernier a été suspendu provisoirement, et ce jusqu’à la résolution de l’affaire.

L’UCI ne fera pas d’autres commentaires à ce stade de la procédure.

(*) Conformément au Code Mondial Antidopage et au RAD UCI, l’UCI a mis en place une stratégie de stockage et de réanalyse des échantillons. Cette stratégie mise en œuvre par la Fondation Antidopage du Cyclisme (CADF) stipule que les échantillons des leaders des Grands Tours, des Championnats du Monde UCI et des classements UCI de toutes les disciplines cyclistes seront conservés en vue d’une possible réanalyse. Sur la base d’une évaluation des risques faite par la CADF, des recommandations des laboratoires, des données du passeport biologique de l’athlète, des nouvelles méthodes de détection et des nouveaux développements scientifiques, d’autres échantillons seront conservés en vue d’une possible réanalyse. Les échantillons sélectionnés dans le cadre de cette stratégie pourront être conservés jusqu’à
10 ans.
