UKAD issue decision - Javelin thrower banned for four years

Javelin thrower, Joanna Blair, has been suspended from all sport for a period of four years following an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV).

Ms Blair tested positive for the presence of the prohibited substance 17β-hydroxy-17α-methylandrosta-1,4-dien-3-one (metabolite of the steroid metandienone), following an Out-of-Competition test on 24 June 2017.

Ms Blair was charged with an ADRV pursuant to Article 2.1 of the IAAF Anti-Doping Rules – “Presence of a Prohibited Substance or its Metabolites or Markers in an Athlete’s Sample”.

UKAD Chief Executive Nicole Sapstead said: “We’ve seen numerous cases involving steroids in recent months. This case demonstrates that there are serious consequences to an Anti-Doping Rule Violation (ADRV).

“Beyond the performance-enhancing qualities of steroids, there are significant health risks associated with their use, including kidney failure, liver damage and an increased risk of strokes and heart attacks.”

The period of ineligibility shall apply from the date of notification (20 July 2017) until midnight on 19 July 2021.
