Onside Law act for HRH Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the grandson of the founder of Saudi Arabia, on the acquisition of a 50% equity stake in Sheffield United Football Club.

Sport and corporate law experts, onside law, represented HRH Prince Abdullah bin Mosaad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the grandson of the founder of Saudi Arabia, on acquisition of a 50% equity stake in Sheffield United Football Club. The acquisition was made in consideration for a substantial investment by The Prince in the playing squad of the Club with the sole focus of achieving promotion to the Premier League.

The deal involved a complex mix of football regulatory, finance, property, tax and shareholder governance matters, with expert advice on all such matters from the onside law team. The Prince’s team of professional advisers also included Deloitte’s football business group led by Dan Jones and football consultancy Back Talent led by Edward Blackmore.

The Prince commented "I have been greatly impressed by the quality of onside law's legal advice and their in-depth knowledge of the football industry to facilitate my substantial investment in Sheffield United Football Club. I originally selected Onside Law ahead of other larger City law firms based on their ability to quickly identify key deal points and to guide me in making business decisions in a sport in which they clearly have leading industry expertise. They have lived up to and exceeded those expectations. Moreover, they were able to handle a complex corporate and property transaction using an impressive team of bright, capable and personable lawyers and I look forward to continuing to work with them closely in the future”.

onside law corporate partner Simon Thorp commented “We were delighted to act for The Prince on his first foray into English football, having been selected by The Prince ahead of other leading City corporate law firms bidding for the work. Our blend of commercially astute and efficient corporate legal advice and our intimate knowledge of football clubs and their regulation helped to achieve a successful completion of the investment for The Prince in a short time frame”.
